15 Best AdBlocker to Hide Annoying Ads on Android [October 2017] – Android Besties

Are you tired of those annoying popup and intrusive video advertisements that appear every time while you are browsing a website or using an app? Here are the 15 best adblockers for Android to help you get rid of them all.

We all know that advertisement is important for the survival of websites as well as the continued development of apps, and most importantly, it is their primary source of revenue. The majority of the websites and services are available for free only because they show ads. If ads are banned then all of these services and websites will have to charge you a recurring fee to access their services. So it would be a good idea to support those websites by adding them to the whitelist.

However, there are a large number of webpages filled with ads, which kills the usability while making it hard for the user to consume content, and then eventually the user is forced to look for ads blocker.

For Android devices, there are a large number of ad blockers but not all of them are reliable and many will ask you to purchase a premium account. To make your search for Android advertisement blocker easy, we have tried and tested all the adblockers and listed some of the best adblockers for Android available for free.

Most of the adblocker listed in this article are absolutely free and open source. And it is important to note here that adblockers are not available on the Google Play Store because any app that is designed to block advertisement simply violates section 4.4 of the Google Developer Distribution Agreement and removed from the Play Store. But don’t worry, we have included an official link for each one of them. 😉

Android Ad Blocker - How to block ads on Android Smartphones

I know people don’t like ads, but they are a necessary evil.

A lot of websites, like this one for example, and apps are offering you content or services for free. They’re free for readers and users because someone else is paying for them. In this case, it’s the advertisers.

Us, publishers, need to display ads in return for revenue that we can use to create more quality articles, pay for hosting and a lot more.

Still, some publishers exaggerate with their ads or display ads that hurt the user experience. Not only that, but some publishers accept ads from networks which don’t verify their advertisers. And that’s pretty bad, because that’s how you end up with malware from advertisements.

If you don’t like the ads that you see on your Android apps or on the websites you visit on your smartphone, you should do something about it.

You already know where this description is heading. The best way to block pop-up ads on Android is to install an Android Ad Blocker.

However, sometimes the ad placements can be really annoying, contributing to not-so-appealing user experience. In this post we will look at methods to block ads from showing up on Android. You can block ads from appearing in apps and games, or only on browsers.

The methods here may work for both rooted and non-rooted devices. It will be specified for each method. Before we begin, you need a File Manager, e.g. Astro File Manager. Any other file manager will work fine.

Disclaimer: Attempt ad-blocking at your own risk. We cannot be held responsible for any effects on your device resulting from these methods.

1. Adblock Plus (ABP)

This method uses ad-blockers (apps) to block all ads in your device, including the ads shown in various apps and games. There are many ad-blockers for Android, thanks to the ever-growing Android developers. The top two would be Adblock Plus (ABP) and AdAway; we wil discuss the former, but you can install AdAway if that’s your preference.

Using Adblock Plus

We’re going with Adblock Plus as it is an open source project and has the option to allow non-intrusive ads. This method works for both rooted and non-rooted devices. Installing an ad-blocker app requires your device to allow applications from unknown sources.

Sideloading is required as Google has removed ad-block apps from Google Play Store. You need to sideload any ad-blocker, i.e. install ad-blockers using its APK file and not from Google Play Store.

Follow the given steps to set this configuration:

  1. Go to Settings > Applications (or Security on 4.0 and above) on your Android device.
  2. Navigate to the Unknown sources option.
  3. If unchecked, tap the checkbox, and then tap OK on the confirmation popup.

Your Android device is ready to install ad-blockers.

Installing And Configuring Adblock Plus

1. Open a browser in your device and download Adblock Plus for Android. Your device will receive the APK file: adblockplusandroid-version.apk.

2. Navigate to where your downloaded files are kept, then tap on the file and install. (If you open the APK file using a file manager, select Open App Manager and then click on Install.)

3.1 On rooted devices: after installing, open Adblock Plus. It will request for super user permissions. Allow super user permissions to Adblock Plus and you are good to go.

3.2 On non-rooted devices: you need a few more steps, to manually set up proxy in your Android. You will need to follow the instructions here as instructions are different for Android versions up to 3.1 and 4.0+.s

Now Adblock Plus will start blocking ads. You can set more options in Adblock Plus like ads filter lists, non-intrusive ads, etc in Settings.

Adblock Plus – Browser Extension

Adblock Plus is also available as a browser extension for Firefox. With this method, only the ads shown on web pages inside the browser are blocked. Ads in apps or games are not affected. This method works for rooted as well as non-rooted devices.

Setting Up Adblock Plus (Extension)

1. If you are not using Firefox as a browser on your Android yet, get it here. Run the browser on your device and go to the Adblock Plus add-on here. Add it to Firefox and Install it.

2. Restart Firefox and browse ad-free. You can set more options in Adblock Plus by going to the Menu > Adblock Plus and going through the options you can configure.

2. Block Ads using ‘hosts’ file

This method uses ‘hosts’ file to block ads. This method blocks all ads in your device, including the ones shown in various apps and games. This method works only for rooted devices.

What is a ‘hosts’ file?

‘hosts’ file is a plain-text file in an operating system to map hostnames (like to its IP address. Whenever you try to launch a website using its hostname, the operating system will usually search the ‘hosts’ file to find the corresponding IP address first.

If the search is successful, then its mapped IP address is used; otherwise a query is sent to DNS (Domain Name Service) to find the IP address of that hostname.

Setting Up ‘hosts’ file

1. On the computer, open MVPS (or or on your browser. A plain-text page will open. Save this page as the name hosts in the computer.

2. Using Bluetooth or a USB connection, copy this hosts file from your computer to your Android device. Note the file path.

3. On your Android, open the file manager in your device and copy the hosts file to /etc or /system/etc. Accessing this location may require you to ‘allow super user permissions’ to the file manager.

4. Rename the original hosts file (if present) to a .txt or .bak extension. Paste the saved hosts file here. Reboot your Android and your Android is now ad-free.

Wrap Up

Although ads are annoying, they are also a great way to try out new apps, products or sites. Allowing non-intrusive ads is a way to be exposed to these new and sometimes great apps via ads. Alternatively many apps offers you the option to buy an ad-free version of the app, so you can support your favorite apps without being annoyed by the ads.

Best Android Ad Blocker for Rooted & Unrooted Devices

Ads on websites and apps are a double edged sword: On one side they finance the content that you’re getting and on the other side they clutter content and drown your phones battery. Personally, I’m not using an ad blocker when using products that I enjoy. It’s basically my personal way of giving back. In the following I’ll show you the best ways of blocking ads on your Android device – no matter if you have root access or not. As root-access will allow you to block ads deep and system wide, it’s highly recommended to have root for proper ad blocking. However, also people without root access can block ads to some extend.

AdAway – The best Ad Blocker for rooted devices

If you have root access to your Android device, AdAway is the best option for ad blocking that you can get. AdAway is based on using a hosts file, effectively redirecting connections to certain ad services to your local device. Because of this, ads are not shown on any website, app or game on your phone or tablet. The app let’s you white- and blacklist domains and IPs – so if you think a certain app or website deserves to show ads, you can simply whitelist it. The nice thing about AdAway is that it’s basically a one-time setup. After the hosts file is changed, you don’t need to run the app anymore – with the exception of updating the hosts file. It’s really easy to setup and you should be good to go for a long time. This, in return, is obviously great for battery live.

  • Easy setup
  • Blocks ads on websites and within apps
  • Does not require many resources
  • Ability to whitelist / blacklist domains or IPs outside the standard list
[/one_half] [one_half_last]Disadvantages
  • Requires root access
  • Can’t be downloaded on Google Play

Download AdAway

Adguard – Ad blocking for non-rooted Android devices

Many people decide not to root their Android device. Because of this, Android modification can get tricky and is very limited. Luckily, with Adguard you’re able to block ads on websites, apps and protect yourself from phishing and malicious trackers. Adguard creates a local VPN connection in order to filter ads, trackers and other malicious content. Any possible connections to Adguard are encrypted, so your data is safe. Adguard is hands-down the best solution if you don’t have root access to your Android device. Since it is using a local VPN connection, the app requires slightly more resources compared to AdAway. However, the impact should not be too negative for your Android phone or tablet and even itself out with all the resources saved from not loading ads.

  • Easy setup
  • Blocks ads and trackers on websites and within apps
  • Parental control options
  • Protects against phishing
  • Works on every device – no root required!
[/one_half] [one_half_last]Disadvantages
  • Uses more battery life / resources
  • Can’t be used together with browser compression services
  • Can’t block content on https sites

Final Words

It does not matter if you go for AdAway or Adguard, both will be able to block ads on your Android phone or tablet. While both apps have their advantages, I personally think that AdAway is the superior solution. While both will effectively block ads in most situations, AdAway simply provides the cleanest, battery-efficient and best user experience. However, if you’re not able to (or don’t want to) root your Android device, Adguard is definitely a good alternative and will has the same ad blocking functionalities.

How to block ads on Android

Since the dawn of time man has sought ways to avoid being bombarded by ads at every turn.  Even the caveman of yesteryear would consistently run into cave drawings promising rounder wheels or hotter fire.  Fast forward a few millennia and here we are with our Android devices being harassed at every turn by advertisements.  While some apps have paid versions to remove ads, some do not offer such a possibility; hence new methods of ad blocking came to be.  There are various methods for achieving a relatively ad free experience on Android, all of which are not very difficult to employ.

Now you should know that XDA is funded by ads. Our 10 servers (we literally have 10), our workers, our belly dancers, and our premium liquor selection wouldn’t be possible if we had no ads. So don’t block ads. But if you want to, this guide will help you.

Ad Blocking Apps

One of the longest running and still very effective methods is to use an app whose sole purpose is to block ads.  The following APKs will do the trick, just make sure you device is rooted first.

An app that has been around for a very long time, yet still functions extremely well, is AdAway.  Download the latest APK from here and just move it to your device’s storage.  Now in Settings -> Security make sure that Unknown Sources is checked to on.

You then fire up your favorite file explorer, and tap the APK file, which will begin the installation process.  Once it is installed you can open up the app.  The first thing to select is Download Files and apply ad blocking.  It will go through its procedure while you sip your hot coffee, and once it is complete you are good to go.  You also have the option to disable ad blocking if you so choose.

Just restart your phone and you are now ad-free!

Adblock Plus

A similar application to AdAway, this works the same way.  Download from here and install the same way.  Once you open the app, you will see the following screen.  Just hit OK.

This next screen has various options.  If you want to hide the icon it gives you a couple ways to do it.  The advanced settings have options to start at boot, refresh, and refresh over WiFi.  I disable the WiFi option because it does not take up that much data.

Just reboot your device and you are set!

Xposed Module

There are also a couple of Xposed modules you can use to achieve an ad-free experience.  This thread goes over Xposed in general and how to get it loaded on your device.

Thread Link

But if you are not familiar with Xposed it may be simpler to use one of the APKs above.

The module MinMinGuard should work for you

Thread Link

Particularly the latest compiled version here.

Thread LinkYou just download that APK and install it with normal APK installation.  Then open up Xposed and click on Modules, you will see MinMinGuard.  Just hit the checkmark box at the right, and then reboot your device. After reboot open up your Xposed app again, go to Modules, and click on MinMinGuard.  A screen will show your installed apps.  Now just select which ones you want to block ads on.  After that you are good to go!

Now for mobile browsing, you’ve got another solution!

Adblock Browser for Android

This browser has generally favorable reviews and will block a lot of online content while browsing.

Play store link

So whatever method you use, you should now be able to use your Android device ad free and rid yourself of those intrusions! Now we have to go break the news to our belly dancers…

How to block ads on your Android

Ads and pop-up windows are one of the most annoying things in the world, and that's why practically everyone has a pop-up and ad blocker installed on their desktop. But for some strange reason not everyone bothers to do the same thing for their Android smartphone (I know many a Nexus 5 owner still suffering through banner ads). Today, we're going to show you how to block ads on Android, including pop-ups, with Android ad blockers.

Follow our guide for how to block ads, video ads, sound ads and pop-ups. / © AdBlocker

Did you know that all those ads (static and video) actually use up tons of your data allowance? Just think about it. If you load a web page and there's a bunch of video ads playing on the side the entire time you're on the site, that data flow has to come from somewhere, and that somewhere is your data plan. So installing an ad blocker on your Android can not only save your sanity but also your hip pocket.

Make sure your browser has popups blocked, and turn Reduce Data Usage ''On''.  / © ANDROIDPIT/Google

For starters, you can use a browser like Chrome that automatically blocks a lot of pop-ups. That's going to be a major boost to your sanity levels. You can also go into your Chrome Settings > Bandwidth Management > Reduce Data Usage to save even more of your precious bits.

Hit the APK link on your Android and install Adblock Plus. / © ANDROIDPIT/Adblock Plus Google Chrome: Fast & Secure

How to block ads on Android (with root)

I'm rooted, so I used Adblock Plus. Simply hit the link on your Android, download the Adblock Plus APK (you'll need to enable Unknown Sources in your Security Settings first) and launch it. If you're rooted, Adblock Plus will ask you for Superuser permission. Grant it and you're done.

You can then choose a subscription – EasyList is fine – and decide if you want all ads blocked or just ''inappropriate'' ones. It's up to you if you can handle some advertising or want everything blocked. Inappropriate ads include video ads and those with sounds etc. Remember though, many of your favorite websites rely on advertizing revenue...

Pick your subscription, uncheck Acceptable Ads and ditch that icon. / © ANDROIDPIT/Adblock Plus

To hide the icon in your notification drawer you can tick the box but this will only make the notification icon invisible. If you want it out of your notification bar entirely you'll need to go to your device's Settings > Apps > Adblock Plus and uncheck the Show Notifications box.

You'll simply have to configure your own proxy settings if you're not rooted. / © ANDROIDPIT/Adblock Plus

How to block ads on Android (without root)

If you're not rooted, don't despair. You simply need to do a little more leg work with your proxy settings. Just go to your Settings and select Wi-Fi, long press the connection you're on (you'll obviously need to do this for all of the Wi-Fi networks you regularly log into) and select Modify Network.

From here, go down to Show Advanced Options and switch the Proxy Settings to Manual (it'll be set automatically to None). This will bring up further options: you simply need to change the entry in the Proxy Hostname field to localhost and the Proxy Port to whatever number Adblock Plus has told you to change it to. For me it was 2020. You don't need to add any exceptions.

Et voila! Before and after - ads versus clean white space. / © ANDROIDPIT

Now, you can set your notification options as above and start launching ad-heavy websites as much as you like. Instead of seeing all the banner and sidebar ads you'll just get white space – it may seem a little weird at first but that nice ''breathing space'' is actually kind of nice once you get used to it. Not to mention the fact that you won't be seeing all sorts of flashy, noisy and moving image ads all of the time.

Some sites, like Forbes, will still show their initial pop-up advertisement, but there will be nothing in it. Some of these are unavoidable. Combined with Chrome's pop-up blocker (plenty of other browsers have similar functions), Adblock Plus will save your sanity, your Wi-Fi data and perhaps even your impulse to consume.

Do you use an ad blocker or pop-up blocker on your Android? What combination do you use?
